Hi, I'm Dominique! I grew up in a family surrounded by music and theater in Los Angeles, California. My Dad, musician and composer Kevin Toney, was one of the original members of the Grammy-nominated, legendary band "The Blackbyrds” whose hit songs included 'Walking In Rhythm' and 'Rock Creek Park'.
My mom, Phyllis Toney, is a renowned costume designer and wardrobe supervisor whose clients have included Paul McCartney, Diana Ross, Sting, Aerosmith, and Rod Stewart.
My musical journey began at 6 years old, when I started playing piano. I studied at Cal State Northridge and the Colburn School Of Music in Los Angeles. While attending high school, I began to study private singing and acting lessons at the Young Actors Studio, Improv Olympic West, and with acclaimed casting director Michael Donovan.
At 17, I won a scholarship from NBC's Diversity Initiative program where I was mentored by Primetime Emmy Award-winning casting directors Barbra Stordahl and Angela Terry. Under their mentorship, I auditioned for several TV shows including ABC Family's dramatic pilot "Lincoln Heights", making it all the way to the final Screen Test!
In 2009, I received my B.F.A. from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts where I studied at CAP21 for Musical Theatre, the Experimental Theatre Wing, and the International Theatre Wing in Amsterdam. Since graduating, I've lived between New York City and Los Angeles working as an actress and singer, most recently working as Ray Parker Jr.'s background vocalist.
In addition, I have blogged for the popular Acting Website Backstage. I've written and performed with the Sketch Comedy group "Political Subversities", who produced my sketch video "Lemonade Stand", which was featured on several blogs including The Black Snob, Comediva, The Local Couleur, and Jack and Jill Politics.
You can expect my first album out in Summer 2013!
